When "The LEGO Movie" debuted in 2014, it was a genuine surprise, offering comedy and heart where many audiences likely anticipated a very simple animation cash-grab in the LEGO Corporation. It was a cure, sharp and superbly animated. Last Spring's "The LEGO Batman Movie" wasn't quite as successful, showing more interest in mayhem, comedic and differently, than epic storytelling with a dear superhero. It was a one-liner system which grew tiresome quickly, though, once more, it looked gorgeous. And now there's "The LEGO Ninjago Movie, " the next LEGO job of 2017, with Warner Brothers Animation trying to compensate for lost time by doubling down on the brand name.
Once more, the studio does not really get why "The LEGO Film" connected with viewers, and in their endeavor to deliver a popular toy line to the large screen, they overwhelm with franchise info and lean too heavily on mediocre voice function. There is no doubt that "The LEGO Ninjago Movie" will pleasure eight year olds anywhere, however guardians, parents, and older sisters may find themselves mentally checking out of this picture before the first action is over. In the realm of Ninjago, teenager Lloyd is an outcast, with the locals cursing his lineage, as he is the son of Lord Garmadon, a four-armed monster that resides at a volcano lair nearby, occasionally trying to take over the peaceful metropolis.
When the latest takeover effort by Garmadon goes wrong, it unleashes the wrath of feline Meowthra, who proceeds to ruin Ninjago. Needing a unique weapon to eliminate the giant kitty, Lloyd must summon his courage and face his daddy issues, getting a chance to bond with Garmadon, who is buried his feelings deep inside. Where "The LEGO Film" created a world to share with audiences, and "The LEGO Batman Film" strived to begin a superhero adventure with a sense of character, "The LEGO Ninjago Movie" only drops the crowd into the middle of the universe, that has inspired numerous LEGO sets and a Cartoon Network series.
The film is not interested in welcoming outsiders into the kingdom of Ninjago, burning through personality details with Lloyd, who's the city loser one minute plus a masked hero riding a plastic dragon the next. In fact, "The LEGO Ninjago Movie" doesn't even start with cartoon, offering eccentric bookend sequences with Chan as Mr. Liu, the owner of a curio store who tries to appeal a bullied kid with Ninjago stories, trading glares with his kitty, Meowthra. It is a strange way to shoehorn strangers into the story. So, Lloyd is depressed but also a glorious warrior. And Master Wu is your all-knowing trainer, disappearing from the picture for extended stretches of screen time. Okay.
"The LEGO Ninjago Movie" isn't large on leadership, making sure to dazzle the senses before its tends to lukewarm dramatics. The animation is expectedly powerful. It has to be, continuing the LEGO screen heritage with a different dose of stop-motion-style visual joys, packaging the framework with amusing toy motion along with the stuffing the backgrounds with crazy particulars. Directors and the authors have a fantastic time dreaming up ideas for their heroes and villains, but a story doesn't push through the incessant jesting. The core of "The LEGO Ninjago Movie" belongs to both Lloyd and Garmadon and their family difficulties, after the father and son because they reconnect during the quest to find the superweapon, providing hope for a post-Meowthra relationship.
The production works well, but clichés are too conspicuous, replacing sincerity with debilitating formulation, eventually packed as a "believe in yourself" message that's commonly found in family films. It had been already done in the past "LEGO Movie" jobs. "The LEGO Ninjago Movie" is occupied, but it's not memorable as well as inclusive. It's colorful work, however it does not have a defined direction, frequently straining for jokes, which confuses sobering third act emotional movements. It is a very blah effort working with an established universe of fantasy and martial arts recognition, and while the toy line is rewarding for the company, there is little evidence provided here that a large screen version of this Ninjago universe was necessary.
